Kamau Brathwaite is a Barbadian-born poet, historian, critic, and cultural commentator. His Ph.D. dissertation was published as Creole Society in Jamaica, 1770-1838, and remains a standard reference text on creolization in the Caribbean. He has published a number of other academic works, as well as several books of poetry--most famously, The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy. His poetry and later criticism is known for its radical themes, daring form, and transgressive impulse. Brathwaite now teaches at New York University.
