First print appearance/nudie shots: In a Bucks County Courier-Times (Pennsylvania) series on giving birth. Spent childhood in Syracuse and Albany, New York, learning to appreciate ethnic and religious diversity at school and work, from Planned Parenthood to IHOP. Started writing for the Albany High School Patroon, progressed to The Harvard Crimson and internships at the Daily News in Schenectady, New York, The Boston Globe, The Miami Herald, and The (Raleigh) News & Observer in North Carolina. Reported for The (West) Palm Beach Post in Florida; freelanced for The Advocate and Salon.com before returning to Raleigh as a general assignment reporter.
