A 1994 analysis of television news, newspapers, and magazines undertaken by News Watch, a group that advocates greater diversity in journalism, concluded that the media's coverage of people of color is "riddled with old stereotypes, offensive terminology, and biased reporting … In day-to-day coverage, minorities often are ignored except for certain categories of stories--notably crime, sports and entertainment." Furthermore, a 1999 study directed by Pamela Newkirk, a journalism professor at New York University, found that 37.5 percent of African Americans portrayed in Time magazine were sports figures, compared with 3 percent of whites.
