Cape Verde by Raque Kunz

Cape Verde is an anachronism. Sport Utility Vehicles line the cobble stone streets, farmers may carry cell phones, and remote villages without electricity start internet cafes. Foreign travelers may feel they have been transported to a previous century until some rogue technology proves they have not.

Capeverdean work is physical. A power tool usually involves animal labor and people still travel by foot.

Capeverdean wealth is different. Most Capeverdeans value family as life's greatest treasure. A man with lots of money and no children is pitied.

Capeverdean roles are traditional. Men do "Mens work". They Fish, Farm and Build. When that work is done they rest. Women do "women's work". They care for the men, the children, and the animals. When that work is done they start over. Animals do "animals work". They make cheese, milk, and eggs. When that work is done they are eaten.

Cape Verde is in twilight. The "Modern Age" is overtaking it and these pictures capture a culture learning to adapt.
