InTheFray announces its first annual essay writing contest: Audacious Acts! Have you ever wondered what it would be like to buy dinner with 50 rolls of pennies? Are you positive that clothes of the opposite sex would fit better, but have always been too shy to purchase them? Do you yearn to ride in an elevator facing the wrong way? If so, this essay is for you.
An audacious act is the subversion of a gender, race, consumption, or other kind of social norm in a public, family, or campus space. For the essay: First, formulate a plan to subvert a particular norm, and do what you propose. Then write about it. This contest is accepting essays during the entire month of February and we welcome as many as three entries per person. Your essay should be 500-1,000 words, and should clearly describe the following: 1) the norm subverted and why you think this subversion is audacious and important; 2) the when, how, where, and what you of your audacious act, including the response you did or did not receive; 3) what you learned about the norm in the process. The social norm you write about does not have to deal with gender, race, or consumption. Feel free to tackle any category (or categories) you wish — religion, body image, sexuality, class, gender, etc. Be creative and have fun! The top essay will be published in InTheFray Magazine this April, and the writer will receive a cash prize of $200. Good luck!
We are accepting entries starting on February 1, and then until midnight Eastern Standard Time on February 28. Please submit your entry via email at:
