Tikkun (a bi-monthly critique of politics, spirituality, and culture) is holding the youth writing contest in order to generate submissions for their September/October issue, which will focus on youth activism and spirituality.

CALLING ON YOUTH: WHAT'S YOUR VISION?

SUBMIT TO TIKKUN’S STUDENT WRITING CONTEST!

Top five entries will be published in Tikkun’s September/October 2009 issue. Top twenty contestants get a free subscription to the magazine.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline: June 15, 2009
Article length: 700-1,000 words

Do you think regularly about the intersection of politics and spirituality? Are you an aspiring writer? Now is your chance to publish an article in Tikkun, a national magazine that covers issues of politics, spirituality, and culture. We are currently seeking submissions from people under 25 years old for publication in our special issue on young adults' spirituality and activism, which is set to hit bookstore shelves this September. To enter the contest, you must submit your article by June 15, 2009, using our online submissions system (www.tikkun.org/under25contest). All submissions should be between 700 and 1,000 words. The very best entries will be published in the magazine and on our website, and the authors of the top twenty articles will receive free, one-year subscriptions to Tikkun.

For more than two decades, Tikkun has been the go-to publication for cutting-edge analyses of international human rights issues, U.S. domestic and foreign policy, ethics, and contemporary spirituality. The magazine regularly features articles by leading scholars, activists, pastors, rabbis, imams, and other visionaries.

We welcome submissions on any topic but are particularly interested in articles that address issues pertaining to politics and spirituality. To maximize your chance of getting published, you should familiarize yourself as much as possible with the magazine. Your local library or college library will likely have Tikkun in its periodicals section. Or, if you like, you can take advantage of our special student discount and have a year’s worth of magazines delivered to your doorstep for $15: just send an email to kay@tikkun.org with "special student discount" in the subject line and your mailing address in the body of the email.

We are looking for smart, crisp writing that combines storytelling with analytical sophistication. We want to hear you talk in particularities, not generalities. Tell us a story about yourself or your community and then use that story to explore broader questions about politics or ethics or social change. If you can tie your topic in to a current issue or timely policy discussion, that’s even better. Don’t know where to start? See www.tikkun.org/under25contest for some ideas.

We judge on the basis of what somebody looks like, skin color, whether we think they're beautiful or not. That space on the Internet allows you to converse with somebody with none of those things involved. —bell hooks, black feminist social critic
