A note from Executive Director Jon Sawyer:

"Deadline for first round, a three-minute profile of an individual with something to say, is Oct. 5. The 10 semifinalists chosen all get Sony Vaios, Sony video cameras and attendance at three-day workshop we'll run -- plus a chance to compete for grand prize of $10,000 travel fellowship and chance to work with us on an international reporting project. "Professional" journalists not allowed to compete but "aspiring" journalists definitely yes; we're promoting heavily to J Schools but hoping you'll spread the word, too."
