InTheFray (http://inthefray.org) is an online magazine for writers and artists to explore global issues and engage readers with personal perspectives and critical analysis. We are seeking an executive director to oversee business and organizational matters for the magazine and the nonprofit organization that publishes it. InTheFray has published articles from writers and artists on all seven continents, and our articles have won national recognition, including a 2006 Excellence in Online Journalism Award from the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. Our advisory board includes distinguished figures in journalism and academia such as Ray Suarez, William Julius Wilson, and Helen Zia.

QUALIFICATIONS: We are in search of an energetic, talented, and ambitious executive director to lead our organization. Publishing and nonprofit experience is helpful, but leadership ability, enthusiasm, reliability, and a sense of humor are the most essential qualifications.

The position offers a unique opportunity to shape a growing organization, gain an intensive education in independent media, online journalism, and nonprofit administration, and work with other individuals passionate about cultural interchange, human rights, politics, and other pressing concerns of our time.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The first task of the new executive director will be to evaluate the organization's needs and recruit his or her own staff to fill development and marketing positions. The executive director will manage these staff members in several key areas, including increasing the magazine's visibility and expanding its readership through advertising, events, and other kinds of marketing, and obtaining funding for the magazine through foundation/corporate grants, individual donations, and advertising. The executive director will handle or delegate administrative tasks such as recordkeeping and budgeting and will recruit additional staff as needed.

Potential candidates should plan to spend at least 10 hours each week fulfilling these responsibilities, and should be able to commit to a minimum of six months in this position. InTheFray's board of directors is located in New York, but all work for the executive director position can be conducted remotely, through conference calls, email, and online collaborative tools.

COMPENSATION: InTheFray was once an all-volunteer venture, but we now pay key staff members small honorariums, which we plan to increase as the organization grows. For the executive director position, this would be $750 annually, paid in two installments at the successful completion of each six-month period.

What is similar [in war] is the way people act, men in close quarters. It's always us against them. The us becomes ever, ever smaller, and the them becomes the whole world. —Ed Burns, American writer
