Please see the bottom of this page for our recent calls for submissions. We have updated this page to reflect our new policies for the revamped magazine, set to launch in December 2011.

We are looking for writers and artists who can contribute original pieces in the following areas:

News: profiles, interviews, and reportage;

Commentary: personal essays, op-eds, and travel writing;

Art: photo essays, artwork, videos, and multimedia projects;

Cultural criticism: essays and reviews of books, film, music, and art.

Written articles are typically in the range of 1,000 to 4,000 words. Photo essays generally feature five to twenty photographs. We will consider other pieces in special circumstances.

We prefer pieces with a strong connection to the magazine’s themes of understanding other people, encouraging tolerance, and defying categories and conventions. Review essays must concern works of relevance to the magazine’s themes and discuss those issues at length.

We normally do not republish work that has appeared elsewhere, online or in print. We automatically discard simultaneous submissions.

Compensation

In The Fray is a small nonprofit organization, and our funding comes almost entirely from individual donors. We pay an honorarium for each piece in the following ranges:

News: $50-100

Commentary: $25-75

Art: $25-75

Cultural criticism: $20-30

Art/photos accompanying articles: up to $30 per article

Payment is made by PayPal in any of the currencies that PayPal supports. You are responsible for any fees charged, such as PayPal transaction fees.

Copyright

By submitting your work to In The Fray, you temporarily grant us exclusive first Electronic Publishing Rights in the English Language for a 60-day period, beginning on the date of publication. If another publication wishes to republish the piece before that date, they will need to obtain the permission of In The Fray. Any payment for republication in the first 60 days will be split 50/50 between In The Fray and the contributor. Sixty days after publication, you are free to publish your piece elsewhere, in print or online, and to keep any money you make from republication. However, we request that you credit In The Fray Magazine as the original publisher of the article and let us know where it is being republished. We retain the right to keep your work on our site indefinitely, and also to publish excerpts of your work in our email newsletters and on our social networking sites.

Please be aware that we do not honor requests to remove your content from our site after publication, so please think twice about whether you want your writing to be accessible on the Internet.

Joining Our Contributor Lists and Updating Your Information on File

At times we may need someone to write a piece or contribute photography or artwork. If you wish to be considered for written assignments, please email us at submissions@inthefray.org and ask to join our contributors mailing list. Photographers and artists should email submissions@inthefray.org and ask to join our artists mailing list.

In your email, please provide us with the following information:

(1) where you are located (New York, Hong Kong, etc.);

(2) the topics you are interested in (pop culture, economic issues, politics, etc.);

(3) a few of the publications or media organizations where your work has appeared;

(4) up to three links to what you consider to be the best of your work;

(5) other relevant experiences or skills you have (legal training, video/photography/design skills, language or software proficiency, etc.).

We will send general announcements to the two mailing lists. We will also send targeted emails to specific contributors on the lists whose locations, interest areas, and experiences/skills match our content needs. If you are already on the mailing list, but need to update your information, feel free to email us at submissions@inthefray.org.

Call for Submissions

In The Fray Magazine | Call for Submissions | November 2011: The Kindness of Strangers

Recently in China, bystanders walked by after a toddler was struck by two vans — whose drivers then drove away. Her death caused international soul-searching over the callousness and inhumanity of modern society and its often legalistic, self-centered perspective. In The Fray wants to approach this topic through a more optimistic lens: the kindness of strangers. Tell us about those who have touched other people and made a difference — even if in passing. Describe your encounters with good samaritans as you were traveling, going through an ordeal, or just living everyday life. Share with us the kinds of stories that can turn a cynic’s heart.

We are currently accepting pitches for articles that relate to this theme or more generally to the magazine’s mission of understanding other people and encouraging empathy and tolerance. We are looking for profiles, interviews, reportage, personal essays, op-eds, travel writing, photo essays, artwork, videos, multimedia projects, and review essays of books, film, music, and art. If interested, please email submissions@inthefray.org with a well-developed, one-paragraph pitch for your proposed piece as soon as possible — along with up to three links to your previous work — NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 7, 2011. All contributors are urged to review our submissions guidelines at http://inthefray.org/submit.

As usual, we are open to submissions on other topics as well. Please see the instructions at http://inthefray.org/submit for instructions on how to send us a query.

We are also looking for writers, photographers, and artists who can take care of specific assignments, including interviews, book and film reviews, and accompanying photos and artwork. If interested, please follow the instructions at the bottom of http://inthefray.org/submit to join our contributors mailing list.

We look forward to hearing from you.

In The Fray Magazine | Call for Submissions | October 2011: Rebirth

The most powerful stories that humanity tells itself are those of rebirth and redemption, transformation and transcendence — from ancient narratives of reincarnated deities and purifying deluges to modern-day fables of triumphant underdogs and rags-to-riches success. To celebrate a rejuvenation of our own — the launch of our revamped site in December — In The Fray magazine would like to explore stories of rebirth. Send us your tales of people who have started over. Tell us stories of redemption in the face of long odds. We’re looking for pieces that demonstrate the transformative power of a new beginning. Think broadly about the topic and get creative.

Never permit a dichotomy to rule your life, a dichotomy in which you hate what you do so you can have pleasure in your spare time. Look for a situation in which your work will give you as much happiness as your spare time. —Pablo Picasso, Spanish artist
