China’s HIV/AIDS Response: A New Role for Civil Society Monday, December 12, 6:30 p.m. Asia Society, 725 Park Avenue at 70th Street, New York
A panel discussion on the role of civil society in China’s response to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic, featuring:
- Jing Jun Professor and Director, Social Policy Research Institute, Tsinghua University
- Kathleen McLaughlin Reporter, San Francisco Chronicle, Shanghai Bureau
- Jia Ping Columbia Human Rights Fellow, Aixhing Institute of Health Education
- Sara Davis Author, Scholar and former Human Rights Watch China Researcher
As experience has shown, the active participation of civil society is a key ingredient in a successful program to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Despite China’s improvements to its AIDS-response infrastructure, the government’s continued restrictions on civil society limit the activities of local activists, NGOs, and other grass-roots groups in their fight against the epidemic. If a sustainable and effective response to HIV/AIDS is to be put into place, Chinese policy must address the role of civil society in its initiatives.
Please join the Asia Society to discuss how individuals, idealists, activists and nongovernmental organizations participate in China’s response to the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic.
