The fight for equal recognition of same sex relationships is much greater than just gay marriage. My partner is a US citizen and has had to leave her entire life behind to come live with me in Australia purely because there's no recognition of same sex relationships even for immigration purposes. Having said that if we were a straight couple we could get married and I'd be entitled to a Green Card. As it is if I enter the US and mention I am in a relationship with a US citizen I can potentially be denied access to the country because it shows a potential reason or intention to stay. - jadeg

We must go to Canada next week to be married

My partner and I must go to Toronto next week to get married. And we cannot even be married in our church because the Anglican Communion has banned that as well. It is a frightening and frustrating muddle. I do think this kind of lifelong commitment to another person is very important and when both the state and the church refuse to help you in this, you feel lost and alienated. I am not refusing to wed because of this but I am saddened that this event which is the most important kind we participate in as couples can be so overshadowed by others hate and misjudgments about our feelings and worth. God does not disciminate this way and that is what I tell myself daily about this. It is just the stupidity and selfishness of humans that interferes with the good blessings we all seek when making these types of public pronouncements about our lives. - Deborah Emin

Public Education Associate, ACLU LGBT and AIDS Project

I am pretty sure that Rev. White is erroneous in his statement that Fred Phelps is a former ACLU attorney. Phelps did do some civil rights litigation back many years ago before he was disbarred, and it's possible that he may have volunteered his time to assist with some ACLU work at that time, but I have not found any evidence so far that he ever worked for the ACLU. I'm checking with other ACLU staffers to see if anyone can confirm or refute this for certain and will let you know what I find out. However, as someone who was an LGBT activist in Kansas for many years and has been working on LGBT rights issues at the ACLU for over five years, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone, in print or otherwise, suggest that Phelps ever worked for the ACLU.

On the up side, saying that he used to be an ACLU attorney probably REALLY irritated Phelps. :) - Chris Hampton

Well, i have to say he really does a good example for LGBT. "We should be proud of ourselves as we really are." from the typical signature on the forum of http://www.bimingle.com . In this way, i think we LGBT will be accepted by all others in future. - julietxon5
