Victor Tan Chen cofounded InTheFray Magazine in April 2001. With Princeton sociologist Katherine S. Newman, he is the co-author of The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America, which includes a foreword by Senator John Edwards. The Missing Class explores an invisible population — the near poor — who are far more numerous than those living below the poverty line. His writing has also appeared in Newsday, The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Minority Law Journal, The Miami Herald, the Philadelphia Daily News, The Oregonian, Let's Go: Chile, and the book Chutes and Ladders: Navigating the Low-Wage Labor Market. The son of Taiwanese immigrant parents, Chen was born in New York, and grew up in the suburbs of South Jersey. He lives on Long Island with his wife Emi, his son Elijah, and two fat cats. Obama's Reagan moment in Denver Thanks Thanks for the kind comment, Scott. I heard Obama was reading these past acceptance speeches for inspiration while he was writing his, so probably some of the similarities were intentional. We'll have to wait until November to see if he'll have a chance to be the Anti-Reagan.
Rule no. 1 of political campaigning: Embrace xenophobic patriotism Orwellian titles Colin, good point about how Orwellian the words used in politics have become. This trend also extends to the names of organizations -- for example, "Americans for Balanced Energy Choices," which was a coal-industry front group (see http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Americans_for_Balanced_Energy_Choices).
The politics of Pringles Debunked? Thanks for the comment, E. -- which of the above facts are you saying has been debunked, and do you have the link to the article? (I couldn't find it via the link you mentioned.) See my most recent post -- http://inthefray.org/content/view/2912/242 -- for more information on all the claims above.
The politics of Pringles Secret ingredient to McDonald's fries? Very interesting, perhaps there is a reason that highway rest stops always have a McDonald's and an ExxonMobil station right next to each other ...
Not so intelligent, Mr. President Re: Not so intelligent, Mr. President Nicely said, David. I was actually speaking with tongue planted in cheek when I said, "It’s puzzling why certain religious groups find the theory of evolution so threatening." That's why the next line was: "Yes, it doesn’t bode too well for the sanctity of your convictions if you believe every word in an ancient book to be literally true." That is, religious fundamentalists will be threatened by science, but those who have a looser definition of God or spirituality (as many scientists do) will not be. I guess that didn't come across too well in my piece. But your point that scientific knowledge prevents us (or should prevent us) from turning to supernatural explanations for happenings in this world is well-taken.

Cheers,
Victor
Racist (and misogynist!) roundup Re: Racist (and misogynist!) roundup With all respect, I'm not exactly sure what your complaint is, though there's certainly a lot of sarcasm to digest -- on top of the anonymity. You are absolutely right that there's plenty of racism everywhere, and certainly worse kinds than I talked about in my 5-question quiz. I never said that the U.S. was any more racist than any other country, or that it "sucked." (On the first point, I'm not sure how you'd even measure such a thing, and on the second point, we do have to do something about that U.S. Olympic basketball team.) For the purposes of this brief, tongue-in-cheek post, I mentioned some unintentionally humorous bits of news that I had collected from the U.S., where I'm from and where I keep up with the news. (For some reason, genocide in Darfur is not so knee-slappingly funny.) It worries me that you would take the reporting of the actions of a few random, befuddled racists as a criticism of your own country. As for reporting on ethnic violence and atrocities elsewhere in the world, check out the other articles on this site.

Best wishes,
Victor Chen
